The road cycling circuit of La Sagra is an absolute classic, fast roads, good climbs, majestic scenery.
Leaving Castril follow the main road towards Huescar, enjoying the fast section through Fatima and down towards the impressive bridge spanning the Rio Guandal Gorge. Climb back up to enter the Altiplano de Granada, it's arable fields stretching out in the distance towards Huescar. Heading north through the bendy and narrow streets of Huescar the road heads up the lovely valley on the east flank of La Sagra. For the first 8 km the route is in the shade of impressive cypress that line either side of the road. Steady climbing leads past the turning for the Hermitage of Las Santas and onto a T junction. Taking a left, the views of La Sagra get better and better as the road snakes up to the col at Collados. The 5 star hotel and observatory here serves good coffee and gives the chance for a well earned rest whilst taking in the staggering views of the north face of La Sagra.
Leaving Collados the road offers flat out cycling for the next ten miles, passing the famous stand of large sequoia trees at La Losa, towards the lake at San Clemente. Flat and slightly undulating cycling leads over the large dam and back to the main Castril - Huescar road where a steady incline leads back to Fatima and the possibility of a stop at Hotel El Mano to sample their famous tapas.
