Rio Castril Cycle Route

Vuelta de Rio Castril

Leave Cortijo Sierra Castril (1100m alt) and follow the road gently down for 9 miles through rolling fields of Almond trees before dropping down to the Rio Castril along a fantastic switchback into Los Lineras, a typical Andlucian village set just above the valley floor. The road follows the valley floor for a further 5 miles passing some amazing cave houses before climbing up to the town of Cortez de Baza, situated at the head of the Embalse Negratin. Possible pit stop for some food and a drink here. Leaving Cortez towards the east the countryside becomes a mixture of wild west and cave houses. The route now winds back up towards the mountains passing through the small villages of La Teja and Campocamera, where the local farmers still use mules and horses for transport and farm work . For the next 10 miles the road slowly regains all the height lost from our start and travels through a wide variety of scenery, including semi desert, arable, olive and almond groves and eventually into the pine forests of the mountains, offering fantastic views of the rugged and craggy Sierra de Cazorla. Following the edge of the natural parks the road undulates before another super decent down to castril for more refreshments. With 40 hilly miles under the belt the option is available for a lift back up the hill to Puentezuela, or for those wanting more exercise, it is 4 miles and 300m ascent home.
