Walking Holidays in Spain

walking holidays spain

Our walking holidays in the Sierra de Castril Spain are based in and around the beautiful and stunning Natural Park Sierra de Castril. We are based at Cortijo Sierra Castril which is situated near the entrance to the park and also within easy reach of the town of Castril. The surrounding countryside is made up of high rugged mountains, wooded valleys of pine and poplar, and rolling olive and almond groves.
Our holidays normally run from Saturday to Saturday with five days of guided walking and self guided walks on the other days.
Our situation allows our walks to be in a great variety of terrain, from rugged high mountain walks taking in summits of 2000m, to walks in the numerous river valleys as well as walks through the olive and almond grove clad foot hills and the relatively flat Altiplano de Granada. The Sierra de Castril is boardered by the better known Sierra de Cazorla,. together they give one of the largest natural parks in europe. As well as the fantastic mountain scenery, the is an abundance of flora and fauna. In April and May the wild flowers are in full bloom and also there are many migratory birds traveling through the area. The area is very unspoilt, as such it is possible to walk to within 50m of Griffin vultures nests and observe them looking after their chicks in March and April. Wild boar are common at all altitudes, though they are hard to spot. Higher in the mountains are found numerous deer and mountain goats and in the higher areas there is a substantial population of Mouflon. Also in the area a breeding programme has re introduced the Lammergie( bone crushing vulture) back to the high mountains.
