Drawing, Sketching, Watercolours, Acrylics and Pastels

Our 5-day painting and drawing holiday at rural Cortijo Sierra Castril in Southern Spain is suitable for both beginners and improvers and offers you the opportunity of either learning a new skill or developing an already existing one, in a relaxed and info rmal setting. Our art tutor is Adrian Tiddy, who, until coming to Spain in 2006, taught art at The City of Bristol College.

Overview of the holiday

The holiday is centred at Cortijo Sierra Castril in the tiny pueblo of Puentezuela, which is on the edge of the Sierra Castril Natural Park . This is the true, rural Spain, not a burger bar in sight! Yet only 1h 35m from Granada airport.

On this short break there will be 22 hours of tutor-contact and the sessions will cover:

•  Materials: the use of brushes, types and use of paper, canvas and alternatives

•  Basic drawing skills: form, tone and shading, proportion and composition

•  Perspective and composition

•  Watercolour: colour and tone and using washes

•  Techniques, tips and guidance

The techniques of drawing and painting will be taught in easy, manageable ‘bites' as our aim is that you will quickly learn to use these techniques in a relaxed and easy way, which will encourage you to follow your own inspirations and help you gain maximum enjoyment from your art. The art sessions will take place both at the cortijo and out in the stunning countryside.

Day One

You will be collected from the airport and brought by a scenic route to Cortijo Sierra Castril, where you will have the opportunity to unpack and relax before lunch is served at 2 pm .

After lunch you will meet Adrian, the tutor, and the first art session will begin. This session will take place at the cortijo and will give an overview of the art activities and look at materials, styles and colour.

Early evening is your own. A stroll down to Castril for an early evening drink (accompanied by Bruce or Patricia and Adrian) is recommended as it offers you the opportunity to view this attractive, traditional hill town, which is one of our painting location later in the course. If the walk back up to the cortijo seems just that little bit too energetic after what has probably been a long day, we will be only to happy to come down and collect you. Alternatively, a stroll around the immediate area of the cortijo taking in the local views is a very pleasant way to pass the time. Dinner will be served 8.30 pm

Day Two

Breakfast will be served at 9 am and after breakfast a drawing and sketching session covering still life, using the medium of your choice, will take place on the terrace of the cortijo.

Late morning will see us drive to Lake Bolera, one of the many beautiful lakes in this area, where a picnic lunch will be served. After lunch you will have the opportunity to draw and sketch the lake and the magnificent landscape. See our photo gallery

On return from Lake Bolera the time is your own until dinner is served at 8.30 pm, however, we suggest that you might find a gentle walk through the olive groves or a trip into the Natural Park to your liking. The trip into the Natural Park will be accompanied by Bruce, who knows the area well and has a great deal of knowledge of local animal and bird life.

Day Three

Breakfast will be served at 9 am, after which a watercolour session will take place at the cortijo. In this session we will look at tone, colour, washes and landscapes.

At approximately 1 pm we will leave the cortijo and drive to one of the many stunning locations in our area where we will have lunch at one of the local restaurants before taking photographs of the landscape in preparation for our painting session the next day (a camera will be available if required). We will return to the cortijo where you will have two photographs of your choice printed out in readiness for tomorrow's painting session. Dinner tonight will be a traditional Spanish meal, cooked by a local lady.

Day Four

Breakfast will be at 9 am. This is you final full day of painting and we begin with a session at the cortijo where you will choose the medium you want to work in and produce a painting from your digital photographs.

After lunch we will go down to the lovely little town of Castril where you will have the opportunity to draw or paint the many old buildings and winding streets or the landscape. The evening meal will be served at 8.30 pm .

Day Five

Breakfast will be served at 9 am, after which we will visit Castril again to walk through the wonderful River Castril Gorge (bring your camera!). This is quite an easy walk and rather unique! The rest of the morning can be spent just sitting on the terrace of the bar and watching village life go by, or, if you are really keen, doing more sketching! However, please note, there will be no tutor contact today. We will return to the cortijo where lunch will be served. The afternoon will be yours to fill as you wish and in the late afternoon we will leave Cortijo Sierra Castril and travel to Granada Airport for you flight home.
